Liberty Head Coach Set to Become One of Highest-Paid Non-Power Five Coaches

Auburn Buyout Clears Path for Freeze's Return to SEC

In a major shakeup in the college football landscape, Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze has agreed to a new eight-year contract with the Flames, reportedly making him one of the highest-paid non-Power Five coaches in the country. The deal is said to be worth $65 million annually and includes a $10 million buyout clause. This news comes just days after Freeze was rumored to be a top candidate for the vacant Auburn head coaching position.

Freeze has already received a buyout from his Liberty contract, paving the way for his return to the SEC after a two-year stint in the FCS. The former Ole Miss coach had previously led the Rebels to three straight bowl appearances before being fired in 2017 for a series of off-field indiscretions. However, he has since rebuilt his reputation at Liberty, guiding the Flames to the Independents Bowl in 2021 and a 9-5 record in 2022.

Freeze's departure from Liberty leaves a big hole in the Flames' program, but his new contract is a testament to his success in turning around the program in just three seasons. It will be interesting to see how he fares at Auburn, a program with a long and proud tradition in the SEC. The Tigers have struggled in recent years, but Freeze has a proven track record of success and could be the man to lead them back to prominence.
